Charisse Fandrich of the American Cancer Society (second from left) receives a check for $7,034 from (far right) Neil Ness of the Mandan Rodeo Committee. Also on hand for the presentation were Deb Knuth, the artist involved with the Tough Enough to Wear Pink poster project, and Cathy Schumacher, who donated the one carat diamond ring from Schumacher’s Diamond Cutters and Jeweler as the top prize in the raffle.
July 28 -Mandan Rodeo Chairman Neil Ness today announced that the rodeo committee’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink projects this year raised just over $7,000 for breast cancer research and education.
Ness and other rodeo committee members gathered to present a check to the American Cancer Society.
Ness said, "On behalf of the Mandan Rodeo Committee, I would like to thank everyone that has been involved with raising this money for breast cancer research. We are proud to be part of the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign along with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association."
Charisse Fandrich, community relations manager for the American Cancer Society’s Great West Division commented, “The Tough Enough to Wear Pink program that was started by Wrangler in 2005 has added to the awareness of breast cancer and the need for more research all across the country. The Mandan Rodeo committee has taken on this project locally and it shows their commitment to get involved and fight back against this terrible disease.”
Fandrich thanked Mandan Rodeo volunteers for their fundraising efforts, plus Schumacher’s Diamond Cutters and Jewelers, and Hair For You Salon for their generous donations to the project. “We appreciate everything they have done to make Tough Enough to Wear Pink a success in Mandan and for cancer research,” she said.
The Mandan Rodeo Committee conducted three Tough Enough to Wear Pink projects in association with the 2008 rodeo.
Ness credits committee member Trish Hulm for the most successful project, a raffle for a one carat diamond ring donated by Schumacher’s Diamond Cutters and Jewelers, $500 in Mandan Bucks and a $150 gift certificate from Hair For You Salon & Day Spa. The committee also donated $1 for each ticket sold for the July 3 rodeo performance, and $2 from the sale of each commemorative Mandan Rodeo Days poster featuring cancer survivor and Miss Rodeo America 2007 Ashley Andrews.
The drawing for the raffle was conducted at the July 3 rodeo. The winner of the diamond ring is Dee Persson, Bismarck. Receiving the $500 in Mandan Bucks is Adrian Crowfeather, Bismarck, and Kristen Meidinger, Bismarck, won the Hair for You Salon gift certificate.
Posters remain on sale at Lindy Sue’s Candies and Soda Fountain in Mandan and in Bismarck at RCC Western Store, Corral West Ranchwear and Diamond W Animal Supply. The poster showcases a painting of Andrews by artist Deb Knuth of Wilton. Knuth donated the original oil painting to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora.
The Mandan Rodeo has raised several thousand dollars in the last three years for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society through raffles for pink prizes including a tractor, four-wheeler, and a hand-made quilt.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association launched the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” initiative in 2005 to raise funds for breast cancer treatments, education, screening and research. It started with Wrangler and has now extended to pink products from many rodeo sponsors. Cowboys and cowgirls wear pink to show a united and “tough” stance for eradicating breast cancer through treatment, education and research.

A fan of horsepower, whether on one wheel, two wheels or four legs, pro stunt performer Jason Britton will be at the July 3 rodeo performance to meet fans and interview rodeo competitors for his “Superbikes” hit TV show on Speedvision.
Britton grew up in Huntington Beach, Calif., and started riding motorcycles at age 2. By the time he was 10, he was a successful BMX and Motocross racer. At age 16, he was an expert ranked MX racer and was finally old enough to jump onto street bikes.
Once aboard the powerful sport bikes, Britton found his calling, not road racing, but what he refers to as "No Limit Extreme Entertainment." Britton takes his talent and skills on a bike to a new level that some call an art form. He performs in shows and stunt competitions, collects bikes, and makes extreme videos.
Britton is in demand in Hollywood. When a character is required to ride a sport bike, Britton gets the call to make it visually exciting. He doubled for Ice Cube in Torque and did stunts in Biker Boyz. He has also appeared in numerous national commercials for companies including Pepsi and McDonalds as well as for one of his main sponsors, ICON.
